As the wedding season draws to a close, the proposal season is just getting to a start. There is no doubt that romance is very much in the air during the winter months, especially around the festive season.

In the UK, the most popular day of the year to propose is Christmas Eve. When asked why, the biggest response from men was that the occasion felt romantic and being around all the family at this time of year was a big plus point.

What makes a good proposal?

Simply popping the question is what women prefer. Straight to the point, a simple “will you marry me?” This tops any poem you have poured your heart out over or proposal over social media.

Whilst women want the question to be straight forward, a little thought should be taken on where to ask it.

Where are you going to propose?

 “After 5 years of being together, buying a house and then ‘we were on a break’ and got back together scenario, I decided the time was right to propose. I planned to do it on Christmas Eve. I booked the Langham Hotel in London for dinner and overnight stay. The day before, I told her I was going shopping in London with my sister. She thought I was mad going shopping the day before Christmas Eve and was annoyed that I hadn’t done my Christmas shopping earlier. This all added to the surprise and I have to admit I did enjoy winding her up! I wanted to make sure everything went smoothly. I instructed the waiting staff to place the ring in a silver domed serving dish which would be presented to her after dessert. Sounds a bit corny but she loved the old fashioned surprise element of it. The morning of the proposal, she thought we were travelling down to my parents’ house to spend the festive period with them. When we arrived at the hotel I simply said it was part of her Christmas present. While men seem to get in to the romantic festive spirit, women seem to prefer to be asked for their hand in marriage on Valentine’s Day or the anniversary of when you first met while on holidays at an exotic location.

Wherever you choose to ask the question, remember that it is one of the most important questions you will ever ask. It is a life changing moment that you will both cherish forever.

So now you’ve found the one and you’ve decided on a date and place to propose. Now to find the ring to match. It’s not an easy task but it’s not impossible either.

There are 2 main things to consider, her style and lifestyle and your budget.

If she has a full-on job and works with her hands, try to go for a very secure setting, like a rub-over setting that doesn’t stick out too much. With this kind of setting, the stone is surrounded by metal and cannot fall off. In terms of style, try to find a compromise between what you like and what you think she would like. Surely, she has been dropping hints along the way. Or maybe her sister and best friend could give you some advice?
