The Filigree links Bangle, £745
Filigree is one of the most ancient of jewellery-making techniques, with the earliest examples from ancient Mesopotamia dating back over 5,000 years.
The tradition has since spanned generations and cultures and endures today, though it’s considered dated by its critics.
An extraordinary craft, often mistaken for hand engraving, filigree is actually the very opposite. The technique doesn’t involve sculpting or carving but is instead created by the intricate weaving together of fine pliable threads of precious metal, which creates exquisitely beautiful shapes and patterns.
UK Jewellery Designer of the Year, Arabel Lebrusan is a modern day pioneer of filigree and her contemporary interpretations of this classic artisan skill are anything but old fashioned.
Embracing this ancient and multi-cultural art form, Arabel has brought about something of a revival, creating stunning forever pieces that are fresh and relevant, yet still maintain an unmistakably vintage, folkloric feel.
A highlight from her current collection is The Filigree Links Bangle, a striking statement piece, that’s worn by Queen Letizia of Spain.
While modern jewellery making has come a long way from the painstaking processes of millennia past, Arabel’s affinity for traditional craftsmanship fuels her passion for keeping the design and production processes at an artisanal level.
As with all her work, The Filigree Collection is hand finished by master craftsmen in the UK and Arabel’s native Spain; each design brought to life using only 100% recycled or fair trade gold, silver or platinum.
