FAIRTRADE GOLD

Fairtrade Gold

90% of the world's gold miners work in artisanal and small-scale mines, with an estimated 100 million people across the globe relying on small-scale mining to support their families and communities.

These gold mines can be hazardous places, with miners working in structurally insecure pits, without protective gear and with harmful chemicals like mercury, which can contribute to long-term health problems and contaminate local water supplies.

They're exploited regularly by middle men and earn only just enough to get by. These people are leading back-breaking, precarious lifestyles not to thrive, but merely to survive. But, by buying Fairtrade Gold, you have the power to do something about this.

WHAT IS FAIRTRADE GOLD?

Fairtrade Gold is the world's first independent ethical certification system for gold. Buying Fairtrade Gold makes a tangible difference to the lives of miners, their families and their communities. Jewellery that bears the Fairtrade Gold stamp is extra special because its mere existence has contributed to improved working conditions and financial security for the miners involved in its production. Fairtrade Gold also allocates additional funds for investment in the future of the miners' families and communities, through education, medical care or environmental projects.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

Sotrami Fairtrade Gold

Our current Fairtrade Gold comes from Peru's Sotrami Mine, in the arid mountains south of Lima and Cusco. This community has worked hard, year after year, to achieve the Fairtrade certification.

"We are asking you to promote Fairtrade Gold to the market so that customers can use our gold. It is not just a present you give to us or something you do to help us, it is a merit that we gain because we are contributing to developing responsible mining which treats people and the environment carefully.  Downstream from our mine there is a valley which is used for agriculture and produces a lot of olives. People along the river keep an expectant eye on our business, which is why we have to control our emissions and our waste and have to be very careful.

Those successes show you that we are carrying out responsible mining. In Peru and the rest of the world, a lot of people stigmatise mining as a dirty and polluting activity. But there are examples such as ours which show that we do take care of the environment and work in a healthy way"

- Eugenio Huayhua Vera, Sotrami S.A., Peru

Lebrusan Studio wedding rings crafted from Fairtrade Gold

We're very proud to say that in 2011 we were specially selected, along with 15 other jewellers worldwide, to launch Fairtrade Gold. Ever since gaining our certification, we've moved, collaboratively, from strength to strength, enjoying a mutually beneficial relationship. With pride, we serve as a mouthpiece for Fairtrade Gold on a local level, our jewels acting as ambassadors for the organisation and its incredible work.

We currently offer Fairtrade Gold across our collections, from our engagement rings to our wedding rings and our bespoke commissions. It's a popular choice, and one we're always proud to incorporate.

To celebrate and assure a jewel's provenance, it's stamped with the official Fairtrade hallmark at London's Assay Office.

We are also very proud to say that our Sales & Production Manager, Kim Mundell, has been awarded the Fairtrade Gold Sales Ambassador Certification!
