At the centre of The Birth of Venus - the 1400s painting by Italian artist Sandro Botticelli - is the triumphant Goddess of Love and Beauty known by the Romans as Venus and by the Greeks as Aphrodite. Nude and emerging from a shell like a luminous new pearl, Venus perfectly embodies the rebirth of civilisation, new hope and social shift that followed the turmoil of the Middle Ages. This ethereal radiance and almost intangible beauty was the inspiration behind the Birth of Venus earrings.
Our loyal client James knew that Arabel had returned from a trip to French Polynesia with a small treasure trove of black Tahitian pearls – and he wanted in. James explained simply that he envisioned the pearls incorporated into some face-framing earrings; a spectacular gift for his very own goddess. Then, he entrusted Arabel with the forward vision.
To honour the curious rarity of the inky-hued pearls, Arabel diverged from the familiar standard of earrings that drop vertically from the ear, instead designing diagonal lines that follow the lobes’ contours. To emulate the organic, unfixed motion of sea waves, she incorporated hand-crafted filigree twirls.
