Bespoke Santiago Drop Earrings
* Traceable and fair-traded lemon quartz
Rich in cultural, historic and aesthetic inspirations, these one-of-a-kind drop earrings are modelled on the Butafumeiro ('smoke expeller') used in the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. The Butafumeiro is a world-famous thurible - a metal censer suspended from chains, in which incense is burned during worship. Pilgrims and tourists worldwide flock to Galicia to witness the Butafumeiro swinging; a tradition that stems from the 11th century, when incense burning was an important part of the liturgy, being an "oration to God", or form of prayer.
The 18ct yellow gold and fair-traded lemon quartz stones incorporated in these jewels pays homage to the Butafumeiro's golden sheen, achieved by an alloy of brass and bronze.
