What to Do If Your Engagement Ring Turns Around

You finally have a gorgeous engagement ring sparkling away on your finger and loads of people to share your news with. You wait patiently for the moment you can lap up the compliments and have everyone gasping... But when it comes, you look down and see that your beautiful ring has twisted around.

This is a common problem that even the flashiest of celebrities face, repeatedly called out by fashion experts on websites and blogs. "Look at her hand - that ring is just too big!" they cry - but a twisted ring isn't always the result of poor sizing. Top-heavy engagement rings with large gemstones can weigh the band to one side, causing it to turn on the finger.

Though commonly taken to task, the issue of the twisting engagement ring is rarely discussed in regards to a solution. How DO we keep our engagement rings in place, on display and gathering compliments?

Fortunately, there are three very workable solutions to choose from. Before we look at them, we need to consider why your engagement ring slide occurs in the first place.

Why do rings turn?

When your hands are cold and your fingers have shrunk slightly, it's much more likely that your ring will slide around. It can even fall off if it's a touch too large. Of course, the opposite applies to hot weather; when your fingers bloat, the ring can remain stuck fast, refusing to budge.

Rings can also move about because they're just too big. Before you go ahead with a resizing, though, you really need to consider just how often and how substantial the movement is. Remember that your wedding band can't become a guard for your engagement ring because the wedding ring sits at the bottom of the stack.

Some women encounter slippery ring problems more often than others, and that depends on the kind of fingers you've been blessed with. Slim girls tend to have slim fingers with knuckles that are wider than the fingers themselves. With such digits, rings often slide on perfectly to start off with, only to become stuck when they reach the knuckle, meaning a larger ring size is required. This means top-heavy rings run the risk of sliding about, as the band is ever so slightly loose on the finger.

If you have slightly chunkier fingers then you're one of the lucky ones who are better suited to wearing large gemstones on your fingers without the worry of your ring constantly rotating.

What to Do About It

Resizing
In our experience, resizing should be your first line of action. If your engagement ring turns around because it's top heavy, try sizing it to the smallest size you can possibly fit; even if it's a tight squeeze over the knuckle.

Ring Snuggies
These are tiny little bands that fit on the inside of your ring to make it fit roughly one size smaller, concealed by your finger. Snuggies are sold by many different shops and online vendors, including sites like Amazon. Most jewellers can also help you if you walk in and inquire about snuggies. Ring guard adjusters can also fit inside your ring and cause it to fit a little more snugly. Whilst a cheap and quick fix, we wouldn't recommend these options for an all day-every day ring, as you might wish for something less intrusive and longer lasting.

Sizing Beads
If the above options haven't worked for you, we have a final solution - one that we've used successfully in our most difficult cases - sizing beads. These are two little balls of metal that are soldered onto the inside of the ring band. This option is perfect for full-diamond bands that aren't possible to resize.

Remember - you're worth more than an Elastoplast botch job. In following any of these simple steps you can enjoy your beautiful engagement ring without stress, worry or shame.
